A socio-economic study of angling in the Czech Republic
With only a few weeks to go before the entry of the Czech Republic into the European Union it is interesting to look at the socio-economic impact of angling in this country with its 330 000 registered anglers (3% of the population) who fish mainly in calm rivers. In this country there is much concern for the protection of the environment and fish farming in artificial ponds and lakes is also an important activity.
On the eve of entry into the European Union the findings of a socio-economic study on angling in the Czech Republic are of particular interest. As this country does not have any coastline freshwater fish consumption and fish-farming in artificial lakes are important sectors. Some of the results match other studies carried out in other European countries but particular factors (techniques, catches, consumption) relating to this country are apparent in the results.
330 000 anglers are registered which represents 3% of the population of the country. Fishing is learnt at a young age : nearly half the anglers (49%) began before the age of 10 and 18% between the ages of 11 and 18. Fishing takes place with members of the family (36%), with friends (29%) but it should be noted that 35% of anglers learn alone.
Employees represent the largest group (53%), retired people (20%), unemployed people (14%), students (12%) and professional people (12%). The middle earning classes (600 to 700 euros/month) are the most represented. Angling appears to be a popular leisure pursuit.
The most popular technique is bottom fishing (weighted line): 57%, float fishing (groundbait fishing) 19%. Spinning only represents 11% and fly-fishing 9%. It is not surprising that 97% of anglers are looking for white fish rather than trout (27%), while 24% fish for both. Bottom fish : carp (34%) and bream (21%) represent the highest catches. Perch (11%), pike (3%) and pikeperch (3%) are also sought after. Trout (common and rainbow) represent 14% of catches.
Numbers of outings are very high : 62 per year on average, which represents 2 per week in the summer! 45% of anglers go fishing between 11 and 50 times, 33% between 51 and 100 times and 15% over 100 times a year!
Each angler catches on average a little over 40 kilos of fish per year. Catches are kept (in 77% of cases). 26% eat 5 kilos of fish caught each year and 34% over 15 kilos. Only 6% do not eat the fish they catch.
Anglers spend around 750 euros per year. The permit costs approximately 30 euros, equipment: 150 euros. The remainer represents transport and meals. 73% of anglers go by car (within a distance of 10 to 50 km), the others go on foot or by bicycle. 39% of anglers live in towns with over 10 000 inhabitants, 31% in towns of with between 2 000 and 10 000 inhabitants and 28% in towns with less than 2 000 inhabitants.
The motivation is contact with the natural environment (60%), conviviality (with friends) 9%, whereas 17% say they fish to catch as many fish as possible.
19% (with or without permits) go to private fishing zones and 13% have been on trips abroad, mostly spinning, fly-fishing or sea fishing. Their favourite destination is Norway.
55% think the regulations are well adapted, 31% find them too complicated.
