Hi Damian,
I’m the rep for St. Croix in the Northern Rockies. The Avid will cast a 30’ head with a recommend load of around 140 grain-weight. These are hard to find, but you can always make your own.
Scientific Anglers has some great lines that function like shooting heads, but they are integrated, meaning that there are no loops. If you’re looking for floating, try the Siege WF-5, if sinking, the Streamer Express 150 grain, with 1 foot cut off the tip will make it sweet for your five weight Avid. If it seems heavy, cut another foot off the tip.
You can also buy shooting (running lines) with loops from Scientific Anglers and then purchase a variety of either spey tips or you can build sinking heads from their bulk Express line in T-10, T14, T-18 material, which is PVC and powdered tungsten on an mono core.
